Star ratings are not a Japan brief

ORCA Labs · As of August 2026

Star ratings are not a Japan brief. A 4.3 on Amazon.co.jp or a green sentiment bar tells you volume, not the attribute Japanese buyers are using to decide whether they buy again.

The decision sits in the second clause

A typical Japanese review thanks the seller, then qualifies. “It works, but I cannot use the scent in the morning.” “I repurchase only because of the refill pouch.” “The reviews were good, but there is no Japanese support.” The star is often four. The decision is in the clause after “but”.

Dashboards average those lines into a score. Overseas teams then brief creative on “overall positive in Japan”. The landing page keeps the global hero claim. Repeat purchase does not move, because the actual objection was never named.

Where to read instead of the average

Read the Q&A under the listing, the critical one-star and three-star reviews, and the comparison sentences (“I switched from X because…”). Official orientation on selling into Japan — JETRO’s invest-in-Japan material — will tell you how to set up. It will not tell you which clause is killing refill.

You do not need every platform. You need enough Japanese source text, read in Japanese, to name three to five hypotheses you can test in the next 30 days.

What to take to the next meeting

Bring the original Japanese line, a plain-English reading of what it is doing, and one check you can run this month (a landing-page sentence, a shade or fragrance SKU, a support line). That is a brief. A screenshot of stars is not.

FAQ

Can we just export Amazon.co.jp reviews into a spreadsheet?
You can collect them. The work is deciding which clause carries the repurchase decision and writing that in English your team can act on.
Is this the same as a social listening dashboard?
No. Listening tools are good at volume. They flatten polite complaints toward neutral. The brief you need is the named attribute, not the average.
Will you tell us which SKU to launch?
No. We give you the material and the next checks. The launch decision stays with you.
